Your Table Saw Is Waiting to Bite: Why You Need a SawStop

Table saws cause 33,400 ER visits a year. I'll show you why a SawStop is worth every penny and why you should never remove the blade guard.

Imagine This

You're in the middle of a Saturday afternoon project, ripping a long oak board on your table saw. The blade is spinning at 4,000 RPM, and you're pushing the stock through with a push stick—you read that you should use one, and you're being careful. Then the board kicks back, your hand slips, and your fingers skim the blade. In that split second, you join the roughly 33,400 people who end up in U.S. emergency departments each year with table saw injuries (CPSC). That's the reality of this tool, and it's why I'm going to make a blunt recommendation: if you own a table saw, you need a SawStop, and you need to leave the guard on. No exceptions.

Why the Table Saw Is the Most Dangerous Tool in Your Shop

Let's look at the numbers. In 2015, CPSC estimated 33,400 table saw injuries treated in emergency departments, and 92% of those—about 30,800—involved contact with the blade. Of those blade-contact injuries, 93.8% involved a finger. That's not a paper cut. The diagnosis breakdown: 58.8% lacerations, 19.0% fractures, 15.2% amputations, and 6.5% avulsions. And 12.3% of victims were hospitalized. The average victim? 96.4% male, and 45% were over age 61. If you're a guy over 60, you're statistically the most likely to get bit.

What's worse: table saws account for 18.6% of all amputations in CPSC's NEISS database and 52.4% of all amputations related to workshop products. That's more than half of all workshop-related amputations. Think about that. The tool you use to make a bookshelf can take off a finger in a blink.

The Guard Is Not Optional

OSHA's rules are clear: every hand-fed circular ripsaw must have a hood guard, a spreader, and non-kickback fingers (29 CFR 1910.213). That's the law for workplaces, and it should be your rule at home. But here's the thing: the voluntary standard added modular blade guards in 2010 and riving knives in 2014, yet CPSC found no discernible change in blade-contact injuries from 2004 to 2015. Why? Because DIYers keep removing the guards. I've seen it a thousand times: "The guard gets in the way." I get it, it does. But that guard is the difference between a nick and a trip to the ER.

If you're using a portable circular saw, OSHA requires guards above and below the base plate, and the lower guard must automatically return to covering the blade (29 CFR 1910.243). Same principle. Don't take it off.

What a SawStop Does (and Why It's Worth the Price)

SawStop uses a brake that stops the blade in milliseconds when it contacts skin. It's not a gimmick; it's a proven technology. The CPSC's 2017 proposed rule would require table saws to stop the blade when a test probe contacts it, addressing an estimated 54,800 medically treated blade-contact injuries per year, with annual net benefits of $625 million to $2,300 million. That rule hasn't been finalized, but the technology exists. A SawStop costs more—you'll pay $1,500 to $3,000 for a cabinet saw, versus $500 for a contractor saw. But compare that to the cost of an emergency room visit, which can run $10,000 to $50,000 for a finger amputation, not to mention the lost work time. The math is simple: the saw pays for itself the first time it saves a finger.

And it's not just about the blade contact. The brake also reduces the severity of injury—instead of an amputation, you might get a laceration that heals. CPSC's data shows that most injuries are lacerations, but 15.2% are amputations. A SawStop can turn that 15.2% into a much smaller number.

Beyond the Saw: Other Woodshop Hazards You're Ignoring

Table saws aren't the only thing that can hurt you. Let's talk about noise. OSHA says exposure to 85 decibels over 8 hours requires a hearing conservation program (29 CFR 1910.95). A table saw runs at 90-100 dB, so you're over the limit in minutes. Wear hearing protection. And dust: sanding and sawing create fine dust that can damage your lungs. OSHA recommends an N95 or P100 respirator (29 CFR 1910.134). P100 filters are at least 99.97% efficient at 0.3 micrometers. You can't see that dust, but it's there.

Ladders are another silent killer. OSHA's 4:1 rule for extension ladders means for every 4 feet of height, the base should be 1 foot away from the wall (29 CFR 1926.1053). And never stand on the top cap or top step of a stepladder (29 CFR 1910.23). I've seen people do it, and it's a recipe for a fall.

And if you're working on an older home, think about lead paint. EPA says homes built before 1978 are more likely to have lead-based paint (EPA). If you're sanding or demolition, you're creating lead dust. Get a certified lead professional for that, not a DIY job.

What I'd Actually Do

Here's my blunt advice: if you're serious about woodworking, sell your current table saw and buy a SawStop. Yes, it's expensive, but your fingers are worth it. If you can't afford one, then at least keep the guard on, use push sticks, and never, ever remove the riving knife. And remember: stop working when you're tired. OSHA notes that most DIY injuries happen in the final 20 minutes of a project when attention lapses (OSHA). So when you start feeling fatigued, that's your cue to quit for the day.

Woodworking is a fantastic hobby, but it can turn on you in a second. Don't be a statistic. Protect your hands, protect your ears, protect your lungs. And for heaven's sake, get a SawStop.
