Here's a number that should make you sit up straight: 54,800. That's the estimated annual number of medically treated blade-contact injuries from table saws in the U.S., according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. And here's the kicker—that number hasn't budged, even after the industry voluntarily added modular blade guards and riving knives to new saws. So why are we still bleeding?
We're woodworkers, not safety engineers. But we've read the regs, we've seen the injury data, and we've made our own mistakes. The truth is, the riving knife—that little metal fin behind the blade—gets all the credit, but it's not the safety miracle we've been told. It's a tool, and like any tool, it only works if we use it right. And too many of us don't.
What is a riving knife, and what does it actually do?
A riving knife is a metal plate that sits behind the saw blade and moves with it as you raise or lower the blade. Its job is to prevent kickback—that terrifying moment when the workpiece gets caught by the back of the blade and thrown back at you. Under the voluntary standard, all new table saws had to have riving knives by January 2014. But here's the thing: CPSC found no discernible change in blade-contact injuries from 2004 to 2015, even after those requirements took effect. So either the riving knife isn't working, or we're not using it. We know from experience it's the latter.
Doesn't a riving knife prevent kickback injuries?
It can, but only if it's properly adjusted and not removed. The problem is, many of us take the riving knife off for certain cuts—like dado stacks or non-through cuts—and then forget to put it back. Or we buy a used saw that came without one. Or we're in a hurry and leave it off. And kickback isn't the only danger. The blade itself is still a spinning, exposed edge. A riving knife does nothing to stop a finger from slipping into the blade. Remember, of the estimated 30,800 blade-contact injuries in 2015, 93.8% involved the finger. So the riving knife is a band-aid, not a cure.
Is a new saw with a riving knife safer than an old one?
Not necessarily. The CPSC data shows that blade-contact injuries didn't decline after riving knives became standard. That's because injuries are more about behavior than equipment. We've all seen the guy who uses a push stick for a narrow cut but then reaches over the spinning blade to grab a cutoff. Or the one who uses a crosscut sled without checking the blade clearance. The saw doesn't care how old it is; it will cut you just the same. In fact, an older saw with a well-guarded blade and a sharp, properly set knife might be safer than a new saw with a knife that's been removed or a guard that's been tossed in the corner.
What about the CPSC's proposed rule on blade-contact injuries?
In 2017, the CPSC proposed a rule that would require table saws to limit the depth of cut to 3.5 millimeters when a test probe contacts the spinning blade—basically, a flesh-sensing brake. The rule was estimated to address that 54,800 injuries per year, with net benefits of up to $2.3 billion annually. But it's still not in effect, and in the meantime, we're left with the voluntary standard that clearly isn't working. We can't wait for the government to save us. We have to save ourselves.
If the riving knife isn't enough, what is?
Here's where we take a stand: the most important safety device on any table saw is your brain. OSHA says to read the manual, disconnect power before changing blades, keep tools sharp, and never remove or bypass safety guards. And they add: stop working when fatigued, rushed, or distracted, because most DIY injuries happen in the final 20 minutes of a project. That's us. We get tired, we get sloppy, and we get hurt. So the fix is a combination of discipline and equipment. Always use the riving knife, yes, but also use push sticks for narrow cuts, clamp your work, and never, ever reach over a spinning blade. And if you're over 61—like 45% of injury victims—be extra careful, because your reflexes aren't what they used to be.
What should I look for when buying a used table saw?
If you're shopping used, don't just ask if it has a riving knife. Ask if all the guards are intact, including the hood, spreader, and anti-kickback fingers. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.213, a hand-fed circular ripsaw must have a hood that encloses the saw above the table, a spreader thinner than the saw kerf, and non-kickback fingers or dogs. Many older saws have these parts missing, and replacements can be expensive or impossible to find. We recommend buying a saw that has all its original safety equipment, even if it costs a bit more. And if you already have a saw with a missing riving knife, make it your first project to replace it—or at least fashion a splitter. But don't think that's a license to be careless.
Is it ever okay to remove the riving knife?
We'll be blunt: almost never. For 99% of cuts, the riving knife should be in place. The only time we remove it is for a dado stack or a rabbeting bit, and then we immediately reinstall it before the next cut. If you're doing a cut that requires the knife to be removed, ask yourself if there's a safer way—maybe a different blade or a different saw. OSHA doesn't explicitly require a riving knife on all saws, but the voluntary standard made it standard, and we think it's a good baseline. Notice that the only feature with proven effectiveness is the one that requires human effort. So we're going to say it plain: the riving knife is a good start, but it's not the answer. The answer is you.

- Never remove safety guards. If you need to remove them for a specific cut, stop and think of an alternative.
- Use push sticks and clamps. OSHA says to secure the workpiece and use push sticks for narrow cuts.
- Keep your blades sharp. OSHA says dull saws must be removed from service immediately—they cause kickback.
- Take breaks. Fatigue is a killer; stop before you make a mistake.
