Why Your Table Saw Needs a Riving Knife: The 54,800 Injury Question

What's the Real Risk of Cutting Without a Riving Knife?

Here's the number that should stop you cold: 33,400 table saw injuries landed people in U.S. emergency rooms in 2015 alone. That's not a typo, and it's not an anomaly—it's the official count from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) when they proposed a new safety rule. And 92% of those injuries—about 30,800—involved direct contact with the spinning blade. You can't un-see that. You also can't argue with the fact that most of those injuries were preventable.

When I say "preventable," I'm not talking about banning table saws or wrapping yourself in bubble wrap. I'm talking about one specific, cheap, underappreciated piece of metal: the riving knife. If you own a table saw without one, you're playing a game of chance with your fingers. And the odds are worse than you think.

Why Did Injuries Stay Flat Despite New Guards?

You'd think that by 2017, after years of voluntary standards, table saws would be safer. The industry even added modular blade guards by 2010 and riving knives by 2014 under the voluntary standard. Yet the CPSC found no discernible change in blade-contact injuries from 2004 to 2015. None. The numbers didn't budge. That tells you something: guards only work if people actually use them—and too many DIYers don't.

I'm not blaming the victim. I'm blaming the design. A blade guard can be awkward, obscures your view, and slows you down. So what do people do? They take it off. But a riving knife is different. It rides along with the blade, moving up and down as you adjust the height. It doesn't get in the way. It sits right behind the blade, doing its job silently. The only reason to remove it is if you're doing a non-through cut or you've got a saw that wasn't designed to accept one. And if that's your situation, you need to hear the next part.

What Does a Riving Knife Actually Do?

A riving knife prevents kickback. Kickback is when the workpiece gets pinched between the spinning blade and the fence or the throat plate, and the saw throws it back at you—fast. Your hand can follow the workpiece right into the blade. That's how many of those 30,800 blade-contact injuries happen. The riving knife sits in the kerf, keeping the cut open so the wood can't close up on the blade. It's that simple. It's also cheap—you can buy one for twenty or thirty bucks. Compare that to the cost of a finger: the CPSC data shows that 15.2% of those 2015 injuries were amputations. That's thousands of fingers lost every year.

And it's not just about kickback. The riving knife also keeps the workpiece from riding up over the blade, which can cause a dangerous catch. It's a small piece of metal that does a huge job. But here's the thing: if you're using a table saw that predates the riving knife standard—anything manufactured before about 2009—chances are it doesn't have one. And you can't just bolt one on unless your saw has the mounting holes. That's a problem.

What About the CPSC's Proposed Rule?

In 2017, the CPSC proposed a rule that would require table saws to stop the blade when a probe contacts it at a certain speed. The idea is that even if you do hit the blade, the saw stops before it does real damage. The CPSC estimated that this rule would address about 54,800 medically treated blade-contact injuries per year—that's more than the 2015 number because it includes all blade-contact injuries, not just those from table saws. The net benefits were estimated at $625 million to $2.3 billion annually. That's a lot of money, but more importantly, it's a lot of fingers.

But that rule hasn't been finalized. As of now, it's still pending. So you can't rely on the government to save your fingers. You have to do it yourself. And the cheapest, most effective way to get blade-contact protection that you'll actually keep on the saw is a riving knife. SawStop's technology is great, but it costs $1,500 or more. How to Make Your Table Saw Safer Today

Here's my straight-talk advice: if your saw doesn't have a riving knife, either get one that does or retrofit it if possible. If you can't retrofit, then you need to treat your saw like the dangerous tool it is. That means following OSHA's basic rules, even though they're written for workplaces, they apply to your garage too. Read the manual, keep the blade sharp, and never, ever remove a safety guard (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.213).

And here's a concrete example: let's say you're ripping a 2x4. You set the fence, you turn on the saw, you push the wood through. Without a riving knife, if the wood pinches the blade, it kicks back. Your hand follows. The blade is spinning at 4,000 RPM. You're in the emergency room before you even know what happened. With a riving knife, the wood stays split, the cut stays open, and the board goes through smoothly. It's that simple.

One more thing: keep your saw blades sharp. OSHA requires dull saws to be removed from service immediately (29 CFR 1910.213(s)(1)). A dull blade is more likely to bind and kick back. So buy a sharp blade, or learn to sharpen. It's a cheap insurance policy.

Bottom line

The best move you can make today is to check your table saw for a riving knife. If it has one, keep it on. If it doesn't, buy a new saw that has one, or buy a riving knife retrofit kit if your model supports it. This one piece of metal can save your fingers. The CPSC says 54,800 injuries happen every year—and most of them are preventable. Don't be a statistic. Get a riving knife.
