Table Saw Safety: Why You Need a Riving Knife and a Push Stick

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.213 requires every hand-fed circular ripsaw to have a hood that encloses the saw above the table, plus a spreader that’s thinner than the saw kerf, and non-kickback fingers or dogs to prevent kickback. That spreader is what we now call a riving knife.

Here’s the deal: many older saws don’t have a riving knife—they might have a splitter or nothing at all. If your saw doesn’t have one, you need to get one. A riving knife sits closer to the blade and moves with it, so it’s more effective at preventing kickback than a fixed splitter. And if you’re buying a new saw, make sure it has one. Don’t take it off—ever.

Also, check that your blade guard is in place and functional. Some folks remove it because it gets in the way, but that’s a huge mistake. The guard is there to keep your fingers away from the blade. Use it.

For most DIY work, an N95 is okay, but if you’re working with MDF or hardwood, step up to a P100.

Step 3: Use Push Sticks and Clamps—Always

Now, let’s talk about the actual cutting. OSHA’s woodworking safety guidelines say to always secure the workpiece with clamps or a vise and use push sticks for narrow cuts on a table saw. That’s not just a suggestion—it’s a rule.

Here’s a concrete example: you’re ripping a 2x4 down to 2 inches wide. Your fingers are going to be within inches of the blade if you don’t use a push stick. One slip, and you’re looking at a laceration or worse. A push stick costs a few bucks or you can make one in five minutes. Use it.

For wider panels, use push blocks or a feather board to keep the wood flat against the fence. And never, ever reach over the spinning blade to clear scraps. Stop the saw first.

Step 4: Know Your Limits—and When to Hire a Pro

OSHA lists electrical panel work, structural modifications, and gas line work as tasks that carry risks beyond casual DIY. If you’re thinking about modifying a load-bearing wall or rewiring your house, that’s a job for a licensed professional. Don’t risk your life or your home to save a few bucks.

And remember, even in woodworking, there are limits. If you’re feeling fatigued, rushed, or distracted, stop. OSHA says most DIY injuries happen in the final 20 minutes of a project when attention lapses. So, take a break, come back fresh.

What Can Go Wrong: The Kickback Scenario

Picture this: you’re ripping a board, and it starts to bind. The blade grabs the wood and throws it back at you—fast. You don’t have time to react. That’s what happens without a riving knife and push stick. Kickback can cause serious injuries, not just to your hands but to your body.
