Now, you might think a table saw has nothing to do with brewing, and you'd be right. But the point is this: DIY hobbies, whether woodworking or brewing, share a common thread—the line between fun and injury is thinner than you think.

Let's talk about home brewing. It's a hobby that's exploded, and it's easy to see why. You get to create something delicious, share it with friends, and save money. But too many home brewers treat their setup like a kitchen, not a workshop. They focus on the recipe and forget the physics. That's a mistake.

But there are less obvious dangers: carbon dioxide buildup in fermenting areas, broken glass carboys, and even the risk of explosion from over-pressurized bottles.

One of the most overlooked hazards is noise. A pump running for hours might not seem loud, but if it's above 85 decibels, it's damaging your hearing over time. NIOSH recommends hearing protection above that level (NIOSH). So, if your pump hums at 90 dBA, you're slowly losing your hearing. That's not a joke.

And then there's the cleaning chemicals. Many home brewers use strong caustics like PBW or Star San. These can cause chemical burns or respiratory irritation. Always wear gloves and safety glasses. Step 3: Watch your step. Brewing involves a lot of standing and moving. Keep the floor dry and clear of clutter. If you use a ladder to reach high shelves, follow the 4:1 rule—set the ladder at an angle where the base is one-quarter of the working length away from the wall (OSHA 1926.1053). And never stand on the top step of a stepladder.

Step 4: Clean up with care. When you're cleaning your equipment, wear gloves and eye protection. If you're using a pressure washer or compressed air to dry, OSHA limits compressed air to 30 psi unless you have chip guarding and PPE (OSHA 1910.242). That's a rule you should follow even at home.

Step 5: Store your beer safely. Bottling involves pressure. If you're using glass bottles, make sure they're rated for carbonation. Over-pressurized bottles can explode, sending glass shards everywhere. That's a hazard you can avoid by using a pressure gauge and following your recipe's priming sugar amounts.

Step 6: Know your limits. If something feels off—a strange smell, a hissing sound, a bulging carboy—stop. Don't rush. Most DIY injuries happen in the final 20 minutes of a project when you're fatigued (OSHA). So, when you're tired, call it a day.

Home brewing is a fantastic hobby. It's creative, social, and delicious. But it's also a DIY activity with real risks. The good news is that most of those risks are preventable with a little knowledge and gear.
