But before you even think about the boil, let's get one thing straight: home brewing is a DIY project, and like any project, it comes with real risks. You're dealing with hot liquids, glass, electricity, and chemical cleaners. If you're not careful, you can hurt yourself or ruin your beer. I've seen it happen. The Gear: What You Actually Need

The Chemicals: Cleaners and Sanitizers

The standard also says protective eye devices must comply with ANSI Z87.1 (29 CFR 1910.133(b)(1)). So wear safety glasses. You can get a pair for $10. It's not worth the risk.

Also, never mix chemicals. If you mix a no-rinse sanitizer with a caustic cleaner, you can create toxic fumes. Follow the instructions on the label.

The Bottling: Carbonation and Glass

After a week or two, you'll bottle. This involves syphoning beer into bottles and adding priming sugar. Here, the danger is glass bottles under pressure. If you over-carbonate, a bottle can explode. That's why you need to use quality bottles and check them for cracks. The CPSC has safety standards for carbonated beverage bottles, but home brewers aren't always aware.

Also, when you open a bottle, point it away from your face. I've seen a bottle cap fly off like a bullet. And if you're using a bottle capper, keep your fingers clear.

Another thing: the bottles themselves. If you're reusing commercial bottles, make sure they're made for carbonation. Some decorative bottles aren't thick enough and can shatter.

The Cleanup: Don't Skip the Sanitize

After bottling, you have a mess. But don't slack on cleanup. Rinse everything immediately, and sanitize your equipment for next time. Mold can grow in a fermenter if you leave it dirty. The EPA says to dry water-damaged areas within 24-48 hours to prevent mold (EPA, mold and health). So, after cleaning, air-dry your gear completely.

Also, think about noise. If you're using a pump or a grinder, you might be exposed to high noise levels. NIOSH recommends wearing hearing protection whenever noise levels exceed 85 dBA (NIOSH, occupational noise exposure). A typical pump might be around 70 dBA, but a grain mill can be louder. If you're in a small room, it can add up. So, wear earplugs if you're grinding grains.
