Build a Shaker-Style End Table: A Weekend Woodworking Project for Beginners

Why a Shaker End Table Is the Perfect First Real Project

Many woodworking projects claim to be for beginners but quietly assume you already own a table saw, a bandsaw, and a thickness planer. That’s not practical if you’re just starting. The Shaker-style end table is different. It uses a minimal set of tools, has clean lines that hide small errors, and introduces you to joinery you’ll reuse for years.

Shaker furniture, developed by the United Society of Believers in the 18th and 19th centuries, is known for simple proportions, honest construction, and no ornamentation. That design philosophy works in your favor: you don’t need to carve, turn, or inlay anything. You focus on square cuts, tight joints, and a smooth finish.

We’ll walk through a version that uses poplar or pine for the frame and a plywood top, which keeps costs around $40–$60. You can finish it with a wipe-on polyurethane, which is forgiving for beginners.

Materials and Tools: What You Actually Need

You don’t need a full workshop. For this project, you can get by with a circular saw and a straightedge, or a miter saw if you have one. You’ll also need a drill/driver, a chisel, a mallet, clamps, and sandpaper. A router is optional—it helps for the dadoes, but you can cut them by hand.

Here’s a specific cutting list for a table that’s 18 inches wide, 24 inches tall, and 14 inches deep. These dimensions are comfortable next to a sofa or armchair.

  • Legs: 4 pieces, 1.5” x 1.5” x 22” (use hardwood like poplar or oak)
  • Side rails: 2 pieces, 0.75” x 2.5” x 12”
  • Front/back rails: 2 pieces, 0.75” x 2.5” x 16.5”
  • Top: 1 piece, 0.75” plywood, cut to 18” x 14” (or use solid wood glued up)
  • Optional shelf: 1 piece, 0.5” plywood, 16” x 12”

For joinery, we’ll use mortise-and-tenon joints for the rails to legs, and a simple dado for the shelf. If mortise-and-tenon sounds intimidating, you can substitute dowel joints or pocket screws, but mortise-and-tenon is worth learning because it’s stronger and looks cleaner.

Step-by-Step: Cutting the Rails and Legs

  1. Cut the legs to length. Use a stop block on your miter saw or circular saw to ensure all four are exactly 22”. Even a 1/16” difference will make the table rock.
  2. Cut the rails. For the front and back rails, cut them to 16.5” long; the side rails to 12”. Remember, these lengths are the final rail lengths, not the distance between legs.
  3. Lay out the mortises. On each leg, mark a line 3” from the top and 3” from the bottom. The mortise should be centered on the leg’s inside face. Mark a rectangle 0.5” wide and 1.5” long.
  4. Cut the mortises. Use a drill with a 0.5” brad point bit to remove most of the waste, then square the ends with a chisel. If you have a router and an edge guide, you can rout them instead. This is the most time-consuming step, but it’s good practice.
  5. Cut the tenons. On each rail end, mark a shoulder 0.5” from the end. Saw down to the shoulder, then chisel out the waste. The tenon should be 0.5” thick and 1.5” long. Test-fit each tenon into its mortise—it should slide in with light pressure but not wobble.

If you choose dowels, drill 0.25” holes in the rail ends and matching holes in the legs, then glue in dowels. That’s faster but less traditional.

Assembly: Glue-Up Without Clamps Going Wild

Dry-fit the entire frame first. Clamp the front and back assemblies (legs with front/back rails) and check that they’re square. Measure diagonally—if the two diagonal measurements match, you’re square. Then glue the side rails in, using a rubber mallet to seat the joints.

When you do the final glue-up, apply glue to the tenons and mortises, then clamp. Use a damp cloth to wipe off excess glue before it dries. Let it sit for at least an hour. While it’s drying, you can prepare the shelf dado.

For the shelf, cut a 0.5” deep dado across the inside of the front and back rails, about 6” from the bottom. You can make this with a router and a straight bit, or with a handsaw and chisel. The shelf sits in the dado, so you don’t need to attach it with screws—just glue it in.

Adding the Top: How to Allow for Wood Movement

Wood expands and contracts across its width with humidity changes. If you attach the top rigidly with screws, it can crack. The traditional solution is to use “figure-eight” fasteners or wooden buttons.

We recommend figure-eight fasteners: they cost about $1 each at any hardware store. Screw one side into the top’s underside and the other into the rail. The shape allows the top to shift slightly as the wood moves. Alternatively, you can use pocket screws from underneath, but that’s less forgiving.

Center the top on the frame, leaving a 0.5” overhang on all sides. Use a clamp to hold it in place while you install the fasteners. Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting.

Sanding and Finishing: The 120-to-220 Progression

Sanding is where many beginners fail. They either stop too early or sand too aggressively. The rule is to start with 120 grit, then 150, then 220. Always sand in the direction of the grain, not across. With poplar or pine, you can sand by hand—it’s soft.

After sanding, wipe off the dust with a tack cloth. Then apply a wipe-on polyurethane, which is basically a mix of varnish and mineral spirits. It dries slowly, so you get a smooth finish even if you’re not experienced. Apply three thin coats, waiting 2–4 hours between coats, and lightly sand with 320 grit between coats. This gives you a durable, satin sheen.

If you prefer a colored finish, you can use a gel stain before the polyurethane. Gel stains don’t blotch as much as liquid stains on pine, so they’re more forgiving.

For this project, we recommend mortise-and-tenon because it’s a timeless skill and the joint is hidden inside the leg. But if you’re short on time, pocket screws will work—just fill the holes with wood putty.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

  • Out-of-square frame: Measure diagonals before the glue dries. If one diagonal is longer, shift the clamp in the opposite direction.
  • Tenons too thick: If the tenon doesn’t fit, shave it with a chisel, don’t force it. Forcing can split the leg.
  • Gaps in joints: Use wood glue mixed with sawdust to fill small gaps. For larger gaps, you’ll need to recut the tenon.
  • Wobbly table: Check that all four legs are the same length. If not, sand the longer ones down.
  • Finish drips: Wipe on thin coats and use a foam brush to avoid drips. If you get a drip, sand it out after it dries.

What to Try Next: Expanding Your Skills

Once you’ve built this end table, you’ll have the basics for many other pieces. The same mortise-and-tenon joinery works for chairs, benches, and even a coffee table. You can scale up the design to make a dining table, but remember to add a center support for the top.
