The Contrarian Question: Should You Even Own a Table Saw?
You’ve watched the YouTube videos. You’ve priced the lumber. The deck is going to be your summer masterpiece. But before you swipe your card for that shiny new table saw, ask yourself a question that most DIY guides skip: Do you actually need it?
Here’s the contrarian take: for most home brewers—er, home improvement hobbyists—the table saw is the most dangerous tool in the shop, and it’s responsible for tens of thousands of emergency room visits every year. The CPSC estimated 33,400 table saw injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments in 2015, of which about 30,800 (92 percent) involved contact with the blade. That’s not a typo. And despite voluntary safety standards that added modular blade guards and riving knives, the CPSC found no discernible change in blade-contact injuries from 2004 to 2015. So the tool that’s supposed to make your deck project easier is also the one most likely to send you to the ER.
Now, I’m not saying you should never touch a table saw. I’m saying that before you buy one, you should think hard about whether the projects you actually do justify the risk. You could buy a contractor table saw for $600–$800, or you could rent one for $50 a day from a local tool rental. If you rent, you get the saw for a weekend, you make your cuts, and you return it. You’re not storing it, you’re not maintaining it, and you’re not tempted to use it for every little project that comes along.
If you hire out the rips, a local lumberyard might charge $0.50 per cut. That’s $18 for all your rips. You could even have the lumberyard do the crosscuts too, but those are safer on a miter saw. There’s a broader point here. The DIY home improvement market is booming—estimated at $0.98 trillion in 2025 and projected to reach $1.57 trillion by 2030. But not every project should be DIY. OSHA explicitly notes that tasks such as electrical panel work, structural modifications, and gas line work carry risks beyond casual DIY capability and should be hired out. That’s not just for safety—it’s for legal and insurance reasons too. Do you want to be liable for a faulty gas line that blows up your neighbor’s house?
I know the urge to save money and do it yourself. The Harvard JCHS reports that homeowners are spending on average almost $4,700 on improvements in 2023, nearly 9 percent above the previous market boom in 2007. But that money is better spent on a professional for high-risk tasks.
So here’s my recommendation: for any project that involves a table saw, ask yourself if you can rent one or hire out the cuts. If the answer is yes, do that. You’ll save money, time, and possibly your fingers. And when you do use power tools, wear the damn safety gear.
